Devlog 8: End of Production 2
It's time to stop!..with production!
This was our last week of production, meaning from now on, we are NOT allowed to add any more new features or mechanics to the game!
From now on we have to polish up anything that needs polishing.
But first, let's have a look at what we did add in our final week, shall we?
The Code
Sound
We added more sound effects for our characters movements! Last week you could hear them running, but we added a bit more now!
Both characters now have a jumping and landing sound effect and also a death sound for when you get a little too close to the spikes.
Our little guy has a sound now for his dashing, and the big guy has one for the Anchoring and Unanchoring.
What about them pulling eachother towards themselves? No worries, we didn't forget! Bling will whistle Blong when pulling, and Blong will 'call' for Bling when he pulls!
BugFixes
Bugs where all over the place now all known bugs have been fixed; to name some of the bugfixes I did, there was a bug where the player would be stuck in dash animation of calling animation, this no longer happens, there was a bug where you could anchor everywhere that is also fixed, all audio related bugs (too many to name) have been resolved, and bugs in the main menue have been fixed aswell.
MainMenu
A neat main menu has been added, you get the options to play, show controls, or quit, when clicking on the show controls it will show the controls of the device you're currently using; so if you're using a controller; you will see controller controls, and same for keyboard.
The Art
Characters
Now, last week we said we only had our big guy's animations left to make. And here we are, happy to say Lisa managed to finish it all up!
Let's have a look at them:
We now have a Call animation for the big man. This animation will play whenever he pulls the little one towards him! It was quite tricky getting this right as there's very little reference in a cartoony style for this, but it looks quite good!
He officially jumps! Woo!! No more idle animation jumps in game to be seen, only actual jumping from now on.
He's quite bouncy with his jumps which felt super nice and in touch with the old animation style.
Needless to say we are very happy with this one!
But what about the anchor you might say?
Well here it is! Our man has his full set of the Anchoring animation! We decided to split it up in 3 parts.
1. The Anchor animation: Here he anchors himself into the wall, this is when the anchor key is pressed.
2. The Anchoring animation: Here he's already anchored in the wall, It's 1 frame right now but there could be extra frames added in the polishing weeks.
3. The Unanchor animation: When the anchor key is pressed while already anchored, the character will unanchor himself and let go of the wall.
Visual elements
After last week we went crazy on the visual elements. Every level got his own color scheme of rocks and gems. We filled it with support beams, pillars and arrows to guide the way. The color scheme per level will really stand out in polish when we add the color overlay. In the later levels we also added vegetation! This gives the feeling we are going up!
Wall decor
Next to that Maaike made a bunch of wall decor: some relics, gold and gems. This makes the game more interesting and fun to look at. These are shown with the standard tilemap but we have more tilemaps! When we combine the 2 this will look even better.
Tilemap
The rock tileset from last week has been broadened to include all tile variations. A grass tileset has been created for when the player leaves the cave. And a dirt tileset as a transition from stone to grass.
Next we're going to make some tile variations to reduce the repetitiveness and make levels feel more organic.
Menu's
Not only the main menu is in the game but we also have a controls menu. This shows which controls to use. When you open the menu with the mouse the controls for keyboard will be shown. If you open the menu with a controller the controls for controller will be shown!
Next week
The next 2 weeks are our polishing weeks. We are not gonna be adding any new mechanics or features! We'll be going everything we have in our game and polish everything that needs it.
Till next week!
